We are all leaders, whether we work in official leadership roles, or in our daily capacity to choose relational paths of connection, compassion, and communication in which we invite self, others, and the systems we live within to move toward more well-being. True leadership is responsive and directive, emergent and influencing, and facilitates/maintains healthy complex systems. Part of the art of leadership is developing mind qualities like understanding and sensing patterns in complex human systems, staying in curiosity, and seeing across the “social synapse” to engage others. Another key is having the relational presence and skills to guide emergence and integration in human systems while avoiding the dangers of getting stuck in rigidity or chaos. Richard Hill and Debra Pearce-McCall are leaders in a variety of arenas, as well as leadership consultants, and will share some of the IPNB based perspectives and tools they’ve each developed, that have inspired leaders in healthcare, education, law, business corporations, and the arts. Together, we all can learn how to help lead our organizations and our world toward healthier patterns and sustainable systems that truly support people and our planet.
Debra Pearce-McCall, PhD, LP, LMFT, helps folks integrate interpersonal neurobiology into therapy, healthcare, leadership, education, and more. With experience as a corporate healthcare executive, a small business partner, and a leadership consultant, Debra saw the great need for IPNB to move beyond therapy offices and classrooms to influence leaders in all arenas. Her article summarizing this approach, Mindsight at Work, was co-authored with Daniel J. Siegel, MD, and included in the Handbook of Neuroleadership. A speaker, writer, and educator in the field of IPNB, she’s been committed to growing GAINS since its inception, and is currently Past-President and Publications Editor. Debra is an AAMFT Approved Supervisor, invited member of AFTA, belongs to the Right Use of Power Guild, is a Senior Consultant with the CreatingWe Institute (currently working with a core team on an international training program for coaches in Conversational Intelligence®), and teaches IPNB and Ethics at PCC Institute for Health Professionals.
